HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK ON THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII
The entire state really is like a whole other country (sorry, Texas) and there's no place stranger on any of those islands than Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Steam rises from the ground, and what looks to Peteena like plain old dirt is lava, so hard and sharp that it hurts her delicate paws. And at the end of the Chain of Craters Road, a lava
flow went right down the hillside in February of 2003 wiped out the road. Most of it, anyway. You can still see some signs, and even some patches of the road itself while trekking along the lava.
